A quick guide to cabinet options for your Raleigh kitchen remodel.
Cabinet choice affects both cost and flexibility — and it’s usually the single biggest line item in a kitchen remodel. Here’s a simple breakdown, plus how to decide.
Pre-built, standard sizes, ready to ship. Fast and affordable. Good for straightforward layouts where walls are square and standard dimensions fit.
Tradeoffs: Limited door styles and finishes. Filler strips often cover the gaps where standard sizes don’t quite fit, and the box materials are usually the lightest of the three options.
Best for: Rentals, quick refreshes, tight budgets, and simple galley or L-shaped kitchens.
More sizes and options than stock. Adjustable shelves, optional features like pull-outs and soft-close, and a wider range of styles and finishes. Mid-range price. Fits most kitchens.
Tradeoffs: Lead times run longer than stock — often a few weeks. You’re still working within a size catalog, so unusual angles or exact-fit situations may need workarounds.
Best for: Most kitchen remodels. You get meaningful choices in finish, storage features, and sizing without custom-shop pricing.
Built to your exact specs. Maximum flexibility for odd angles, special storage, appliance panels, or a unique design. Highest cost and the longest lead time.
Tradeoffs: Budget and schedule. Custom work also depends heavily on the shop, so quality varies more than catalog lines.
Best for: Older Raleigh homes with out-of-square walls, kitchens where every inch counts, or a specific look no catalog carries.
Regardless of price level, look at:
Start with the layout. If standard sizes fit and the budget is tight, stock can be the right call. If you want better storage features and finishes without going fully custom, semi-custom is the sweet spot. If the room itself is the problem — odd walls, tight clearances, a specific design — custom earns its cost.
Most of our kitchen remodels use semi-custom — a good balance of quality, options, and cost. We’ll walk through the choices with you during the estimate and flag where spending more actually changes the result.
